Very Minor But Important Accomplishment #1238

Cooper can sit up on his own now. He's been showing signs for the last week or two, but I have to give him full credit for it now.

While he was laying down in my arms, he even sat up on his own to see the dog.

Another Restless Night

Last night. Another night. With parental sleep deprivation. Cooper's been sick on and off for the last two weeks. Mix that with the fact that he's probably teething and you just can't tell what's wrong with him. Do you want a bottle? How bout some Tylenol? Do you need a diaper change? You just want to play in your Exersaucer at 2:30 in the morning? Do you want Daddy to make the monkey noises again? Believe me. We try everything.

He's been in a good mood this evening. We hope it stays that way for the night.

Cooper got extra special messy this evening.

So then it's bath time.

WARNING: Please Don't Leave Comment Spam On This Post (Or Any Other)

I'm tired of cleaning up the comments section because people are spamming my posts. I'm not interested in sandals or discount cat furniture or online poker or buying phentermine. I'm not interested. Sell your wares elsewheres. I will put a curse on anyone leaving comment spam. I do not know yet how I will activate this curse, but believe me I will find out. It's in my blood.

There's a story about a long dead relative of mine, I think perhaps my great great great grandmother, who was supposedly a witch. My grandmother knows the story better than I do, but it goes something like this: She bought a horse from man. The horse died a few days later. She went back to the man demanding her money back. The man refused. She told the man that she would put a curse upon him. The man laughed at her. A week or so later, the man came begging to her on his knees for the curse to be lifted. I'm guessing she got her money back plus some interest.

Again, I do not yet know how to put a curse on someone, but I'm sure I can find out how from a website on the internet. So far in my Google internet search, I've only found out how to put a curse on someone in Yiddish, but since I do not know Yiddish, I'm not sure exactly what the curse does, so I'm not going to mess with it. I also found one that required nightshade and a bat's wing, but I don't know where to get the bat's wing. Right now I'm checking out http://www.witchcraft-black-magic.com/. So comment spammers, you have been warned.

This post is for that stupid, rude, ignorant witch

At school today, Micole was talking to a teacher about Cooper's website. Suddenly another teacher, a real ray of sunshine as you will soon see, pops her nose into the conversation and says "You have a website for your baby? That's just sick!". Micole just wanted to give this ray of golden sunshine her middle finger and a few choice words. She would have, but there was a young student near by.

How ignorant can people be? How rude can people be? There seems to be no limit on either account for this ray of sunshine. Obviously this ray of sunshine, doesn't understand the concept of "if you don't have anything nice to say then you shouldn't say anything at all."

I can actually see how having a website for baby could be considered "sick". If you compare it to all of the porn, information on making bombs, information on how to create your own meth lab, and software to steal movies and music that can be found on the internet, I can understand how a baby's website would just be "sick". Please enlighten us further, oh golden ray of sunshine! These baby blogs certainly must be stopped before they destroy the social fabric of Western society!

Cooper, you and your website are sick and must be stopped at all costs!

There are many great reasons for having a website/blog for a baby. First of all, we have family and friends spread all over the United States. It's just an easy way to share pictures and keep family updated. Besides that there are myriad of reasons to have a baby blog, from sharing information and experiences about parenting with other baby bloggers, to one day being able to show the child how much they're loved, to just having a little creative outlet. Of course, that's all just "sick".

This post goes to the dog

The events of the last year have had the hardest impact on our Japanese Shiba, Dobie. He’s gone from being treated like the King of Shibas to canis non grata in less than six months time. When we ate at Grandma Barb’s house for dinner, she always prepared a special side dish for her granddog. She or Pappy would come over to my house almost every day and give him a walk or take him with them. He had it made.

This is a dog that’s used to being the absolute center of attention. Now Cooper dominates our world. The most attention Dobie gets is when he’s being bad. So of course, being the doggy genius that he is, he’s been bad more often because he wants attention. I completely understand. It's a natural reaction.

Dobie was my first baby boy. I feel bad in how I've neglected him. He's adjusted fairly well though I can tell he's not fully happy with the current state of affairs.

I've tried to get him on a routine where he gets a walk in the evening, but he's used to much more activity.

The script for a normal weekday routine goes something like this:

(Me entering stage door left after a long day at work)

Dobie: (Jumping up and down) “Woof Woof Woof Woof!”
Me: “What’s that boy? Timmy fell down the well?”
Dobie: (Chasing his tail) “Woof Woof Woof Woof!” (translation: “That Lassie joke was funny the first 300 hundred times you used it, so come on. I want to WALK!”)
Me: “Okay, okay. Be quiet! Just give me a minute!”
Dobie: (Sniffing his butt) “Woof Woof Woof Woof!” (translation: "Hurry up!")

(Exit stage door left, return in 15 minutes with a stinky bag of dog poo.)

That's the level of attention that he's been getting around the house.

Lately, he's been fighting allergies and he's not his normal self. On Saturday, I asked him if he wanted to go walk and he didn't even move. This is a dog that if you spell W-A-L-K, he knows what it means. I eventually got him to go with me, but it took some prodding.

So here's where I feel really guilty. It was about 11:45 last night. I was lying in bed and then I realized that I hadn't walked him. He hadn't even bothered to come ask me. I shouldn't have let it come to that.

I got out of bed. I didn't even put my shoes on and walked him down the street. I promised myself I would be more mindful of his needs. Today we played with the soccer ball at Pappy's house. He ran after the ball like a bullet. I haven't seen him run like that in awhile. It's all my fault that he hasn't.

It won't be too much longer before Cooper will be playing with him. Cooper loves to watch Dobie.

Cooper's been fighting a fever and another ear infection. I remember when the only thing they would give him was Tylenol. Now it seems to be some mix of antibiotics, Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Yagermeister, and Benadryl. At least that's what it seems like.

Yes, he's doing much better today.

Any Given Sunday

In my house there are 5 seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Football. The most important of these is of course, Football season. It has now been almost 13 years since I last suited up for a college football game. I miss it. Every day. (But my knees do not.)

I made a huge mistake last night. I didn't wear any Ohio State paraphernalia. I'm just very superstitious, but last night I threw caution to the wind. What was I thinking? Normally I follow the rules. Wearing Buckeye clothing during a game is a must.

Another of my hard and steady rules is to never order a pizza before or during an Ohio State football. I ordered a pizza once when Ohio State (then ranked #1 in the polls) was up 17-0 on Michigan State in the 1st quarter. Well we lost 31-24, so now I will not have anything to do with pizza before or during an Ohio State game.

I'm not sure exactly what the issue is. Was it that I ordered pizza? Or that I ate it? Or that it was delivered? Would it make any difference if someone else ordered it or I went and picked it up? I do not know and I will not try to find out. I will not test the college football Gods.

So it is all my fault that the Buckeyes lost last night. They always struggle or lose when I don't wear something with OSU on it. Ryan Hamby would've caught that pass for a TD if I had worn a Buckeye shirt. This I am sure of. Well, at least Michigan lost.

Cooper and I are hoping for better results today with the Bengals. We're both wearing Bengals outfits. So far it seems to be working as the Bengals are up 10-3 in the second quarter.

A happy Bengals fan.

Answered Prayers

Well I did get some sleep last night. I'm not sure how Cooper did, because I was out. A speeding locomotive could have gone through my living room and I wouldn't have heard it.

We got some photos today that I ordered online at http://www.winkflash.com. They came out pretty good and the price was really good. Winkflash has a special of 50 free 4 by 6 prints when you sign up and use the coupon code PF34GH89. All told we got 150 prints for less than $13 (only 99 cents for shipping). That's less than 9 cents per print. Not bad. The prints were of very good quality, but so far I think my favorite overall online photo shop is Snapfish (but that's only after I exhaust all of the great offers for free digital prints elsewhere online). Snapfish had the lowest price per print with superior print quality.

I 've got another 25 free prints coming from some other online photo store. I can't even remember which one. My order should be here soon.

I also realize I've got an impressive collection of photos. Even if only one photo out of a hundred is really, really good I will still someday have enough to publish a photo book. Not that that's what I 'm doing it for, but I have a lot of nice photos. Hopefully, Cooper and his future siblings will someday appreciate how I've photo documented their lives.

Please God, let him sleep through the night

It was another restless night last night. The second rule of babies kicked in again - "If the baby can't sleep, then the parents won't sleep." It wasn't the same last night. He was fine. He just didn't want to go back to sleep. Cooper thought it was playtime. At one point I put him in his vibrating chair, while I rested my head on his Boppy on the floor. I put my legs up on the recliner. Cooper just sat straight up and laughed at me.

I didn't get much sleep. Somehow I made it through the workday. I suppose a couple of large Mountain Dews helped. I was definitely draggin'.

He's just into grabbing everything and playing. It's amazing how fast he has grown. It wasn't that long ago when he was just a lump that sat, cried, and pooped. Now it's almost impossible to hold him for very long before he gets the "squirms". Another few inches and another five pounds, I just don't know how I'll be able to control him. He hasn't even crawled yet, but let me tell you: Cooper is ready to run.

I don't know if we'll ever be able to catch him.

Coop's almost done with the amoxycillin. We post this photo here tonight so that in 10,000 years when the Blogger server is found in an archaeological dig, future civilizations will know how people in the early 21st century gave their babies amoxycillin.

I consider myself a fairly smart person. I have a master's degree. I've passed the CPA exam. I'm an expert at computer databases and a pretty good programmer. I even know how to make beer. Even sometimes I can make really good beer.

What I can't do however, is figure out how to use the Black and Decker can opener that my wife bought. We've had it now for awhile, but I'm just completely incapable of using it. I line the sharp edge up against the edge of the can and put the can up to the magnet and then pull the arm down, but nope...I can not do it. I'm so ashamed of myself. I mean I can make BEER, but I can't use a gosh darn (not what I'd really say) can opener.

I'm starting to wonder if I was just born without the part of the brain required to use a Black and Decker can opener. I never had any problems with my old Sunbeam can opener, mind you. I can open cans with the hand opener, but with the Black and Decker, nope, nada, zilch, not gonna happen. Did I mention that I know how to make beer?

It's giving me a psychological complex. Soon my wife may have to send me to a "special" place. Like some kind of place with padded walls and doors and pictures of pretty horseys on the walls with rainbows.

Or perhaps I should just look at the bright side and use this as an excuse to not have to cook. Yes. I like that idea. (And it will give me more time to make beer.)

The evil black can opener.

Cooper was not feeling well last night. As you know my second law of babies is "if the baby can't sleep, the parents won't sleep". Mommy took a half day to take Cooper to the doctor's office. We thought it might be the ear infection flaring up, but no... He's got some inflamed gums. Teething. Doctor advised us to coordinate ibuprofen into an arrangement with Tylenol.

Tonight Mommy left to go to the grocery and then as if on cue, poor little Cooper started the fussiness. He does it everytime. He just wants to test me.

I always go down the list of things to do when he's fussy: pick him up, check his diaper, smile at him, put him in front of the mirror, give him a toy, laugh, drink a beer (that's for me, not him) and anything else that I can think of. So tonight, Cooper D got a first class whistling/hand clapping/monkey noise making concert. I have to say it was a virtuoso performance on my part. I had the audience's full undivided attention for at least 5 solid minutes. I don't remember the entire set, (when you're out on that stage you just gotta let it all hang out) but I'm sure that "Yankee Doodle Dandy" was played as it is a major part of my repertoire, as was Queen's "We Will Rock You" (that's where the handclapping comes in), followed by some monkey noises which always grab young Cooper's attention. The monkey noises are always good for some comic relief.

There were some good improvisational solos in the mix, but the highlight of the evening had to be "We Will Rock You". Cooper was fascinated by the hand clapping. You can tell he sees it and he wants to do it, but the message can not yet be relayed from his brain to his little hands. Perhaps the only thing the concert needed was more cowbell and a Skynyrd tune or two.

Yes, it was a good evening. I like sitting on my computer and then looking over at him in his exersaucer. He'll want attention and then I'll smile and he'll smile back. What a good day.

Spiky haired, punk rock Cooper. He reminds me of a young Billy Idol.
